Renate Tölle-Kastenbein

Renate Tölle-Kastenbein (* as Renate Tölle on January 27, 1937 ; † March 29, 1995 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Renate Tölle received her doctorate in 1964 with Ulf Jantzen's work on early Greek round dances at the University of Hamburg . For her work, she received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1963/64 , with which she was able to travel to the Mediterranean . After completing her doctorate, she became Jantzen's assistant in Hamburg and followed him when he became first director of the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in 1967 . There she was employed as a consultant for the photo library and took part in the excavations in Samos for several years , where she mainly examined the former Kastro Tigani (now Pythagorio ). Tölle-Kastenbein was denied permanent employment. She suddenly fell ill on a study trip to Yemen and died shortly afterwards.

Tölle-Kastenbein dealt with numerous aspects, in particular of ancient Greek archeology and art history, such as the sculpture of the strict style , with various aspects of architecture and individual buildings, with ancient armament, medicine and nutritional history and, in the last years of her life, increasingly with the ancient water culture.
