Renauto was an assembly plant for motor vehicles and thus part of the automotive industry in Ireland .

Company history

Stephen O'Flaherty had founded Motor Distributors for the assembly and sale of automobiles back in 1946 . His O'Flaherty Group was considered the parent company. 1958 began the assembly of Renault . Renauto Limited is named as the sales company , although it remains unclear whether this was also the name of the assembly company.

In 1965 O'Flaherty gave up the project and handed it over to the Smith Motor Group, which may have been involved before. Con A. Smith founded this group in 1954. 1956 Patrick Kilroy became his partner. They ran several businesses, including workshops and assembly plants. The company's headquarters remained in Dublin. In 1966, a new assembly plant was moved into Wexford . In 1969 the Smith Motor Group and BLN Motor Company merged to form Brittain Smith and Company . In 1970 the new group was split up again. It is said that British Leyland Motor Corporation was unhappy that Renauto continued to manufacture Renault. Their new company was now called the Brittain Group . Neither had any influence on Renauto.

In June 1972, Smith died in a British European Airways flight 548 accident . Kilroy took the lead. In the same year the Wexford plant was expanded. Waterford Glass took over the group in 1972.

Assembly ended in 1984. Then the track of the company is lost. Wexford Electronix took over the Wexford plant as well as many employees and manufactured accessories for the automotive industry.

vehicles

Renault Dauphine and Renault 4 were assembled .

A surviving Renault 4 is on display in the Irish Agricultural Museum in Wexford.
