College (2005 to 2009)

Montgomery studied at the University of Connecticut from 2005 to 2009 , where she graduated with a degree in communications in 2009. While in college, McCoughtry also played for the University's women's basketball team, the Connecticut Huskies . In her freshman season, she was in the starting line-up of the huskies in 35 of 37 games this season. She finished her first season with an average of 8.9 points, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. For this good performance she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year . In her sophomore year, she was in the starting line-up of the huskies in all 36 games of the season. During the season she scored over 20 points four times in one game. In the end she came up with an average of 13.3 points and 4.5 assists per game. So she was the best team in both ratings. With the Huskies she reached the finals of the regional championship that year, where she had to give the Louisiana State University team defeat. At the end of the season she was appointed to the All-BIG EAST First Team . In the summer of 2007, she won the gold medal at the FIBA U-20 Championship in Mexico with the United States U-20 national team . In her junior season, she also played the position of shooting guard for the first time when Mel Thomas had to end the season early due to an injury. Renee managed to increase her points average to 14.1 per game this season, and she was re-elected to the All-BIG EAST First Team . On January 21, she scored her 1,000 point for the Huskies against the University of North Carolina . Renee reached the Final Four with the Huskies for the first time , where they were subject to the Stanford University basketball team with the Huskies . In her senior season, she won every game with the Huskies, winning the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship for the first time . With her average of 15.8 points and 5.2 assists per game, she played a key role in this success.

WNBA (since 2009)

Because of her outstanding performance for the Huskies, she was selected in the WNBA Draft 2009 by the Minnesota Lynx in fourth place. In the first season she was on the field in all 34 games and is part of the Lynx starting lineup nine times. She was elected to the WNBA All-Rookie Team after her premiere season. In 2009 she scored 9.0 points per game in an average of 22.5 minutes. Before the 2010 season, she moved to the Connecticut Sun team for which she played a total of five seasons. In 2011 she reached the WNBA playoffs for the first time with the team. At the beginning of her time with the team, she was regularly in the Sun's starting five and scored more than 10 points per game at least in the first four seasons. After a season without a start in the starting lineup, she started the 2015 season with the Seattle Storm . During the season, Montgomery switches back to the Minnesota Lynx team as part of a trade. This season she played 36 games in the regular season and is one of the very few players who played more than 34 season games in one year. In the 2015 season she won the WNBA championship with the team from Minnesota and was able to celebrate her greatest team success. In Minnesota, she was an important supplementary player in the successful Lynx team. After she narrowly failed with the Lynx in the final of the 2016 season against the Los Angeles Sparks team, the Lxny team was able to turn the tables in the following season and win the final series against the opponent from LA in five games and so one more Earn the championship for the team and the second for Montgomery. Montgomery has been playing for the Atlanta Dream team since the 2018 season . There she is regularly in the starting line-up again.
