The Renthof is a listed building complex in Kassel that dates back to the 13th century and is directly adjacent to the Brothers Church . These are the remains of a Carmelite monastery.

history

The monastery was built in the 13th century at the same time as the adjacent church. In 1595, the monastery, which had been secularized in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1526 after the Reformation was introduced, became a court school. Primarius was Magister Johannes Lagonychos (Johannes Hasenklau), a pupil and godchild of the Kassel composer Johann Heugel .

The most famous student from this period was Heinrich Schütz , who studied composition under Lagonychos from 1599 and later, from 1612 to 1617, became the second organist of the Kassler court orchestra. In the years 1617 and 1618, it was again converted into the Collegium Mauritianum Knight Academy . The oldest surviving Kassel fountain - the Apollo fountain - also comes from this construction work .

From 1633 to 1653 the University of Kassel existed at the court school , which was established by Landgrave Wilhelm V , because Marburg and thus the university there had temporarily fallen to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt due to inheritance disputes .

In the second half of the 17th century, several higher Hessian authorities and courts were settled in the building as an extension of the adjoining office building. The name Renthof is derived from these early administrative authorities.

The building complex was partially destroyed in the Second World War . After the reconstruction, the then Association for People's Welfare, today's Kassel Social Group, moved into the building. She ran a nursing home for the elderly there. Its use as a nursing home was given up in the summer of 2013 and the residents moved into a new building. There was a long search for a subsequent use of the building and in November 2014 it was announced that the building had been sold to a financial investor and a restaurateur. In May 2017, after renovations, a hotel with a restaurant was inaugurated in the building complex.

architecture

The building consists of three wings, which together with the Brothers Church form an inner courtyard in which the cloister of the monastery was located. Both the west and south wings correspond to the structural condition of around 1830. The renaissance portal that forms the entrance to the building shows the double coat of arms of Landgrave Moritz and his second wife Juliana von Nassau and bears the year 1617. The west and south wings is in the state of about 1830 and contains many elements of the Renaissance period. The late baroque staircase on the courtyard front is the only half-timbered architecture that has been preserved in Kassel.
