The old University of Kassel (also University of Cassel ) was a university that existed in Kassel for a short time in the 17th century .

history

The university was established during the Thirty Years' War and existed from 1633 to 1653. Following inheritance and denominational disputes between the Landgraviates of Hessen-Darmstadt and Hessen-Kassel , the University of Marburg became a Lutheran university. Then the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel Wilhelm V had a reformed university built in Kassel . Contrary to the initial plans to build the university based on the example of the High School Herborn , it was opened as a university.

The university was officially opened on January 2, 1633 and provided with statutes. The first professors were appointed to Kassel in 1628 and teaching began in the following year 1629. Due to the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War it was not possible to fully expand the university, so no medical faculty was established throughout the history of the university. An average of 36 students were enrolled each year . When the University of Marburg changed back to the Reformed denomination, the University of Kassel was merged with the University of Marburg and the location in Kassel was closed again.
