Repentance Tower

Repentance Tower is a tower house near the Scottish town of Brydekirk in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the tower is classified as a Scheduled Monument .

description

John Maxwell, 6th Lord Herries of Terregles of Hoddom Castle , had the tower built in the 1560s on a hill about 700 m south of the castle. It probably served both as a watchtower and a folly and is therefore not a defensive tower in the strict sense of the word. It is likely that Repentance Tower was never permanently inhabited.

The masonry of the elongated building consists of sandstone roughly hewn into cuboids , which was built into irregular layered masonry . Details are set off with natural stone. Repentance Tower has a footprint of 7 m × 8 m. The entrance portal on the north side is accessible via a front staircase. The unadorned facades with asymmetrically arranged small windows and embrasures end with a projecting, likewise unadorned parapet. This hides parts of the stone-roofed pyramid roof of the perched house. The masonry of the central chimney is rusticated .
