Brydekirk , Gaelic Cille Bhrìghde , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or the Annandale district of the traditional county of Dumfriesshire . It is located around three kilometers northwest of Annan on the right bank of the Annan .
history
Brydekirk's history is linked to the Maxwell clan . He came into possession of the surrounding lands of Hoddom and had a defense tower built there in the 16th century. This formed the nucleus of the later Hoddom Castle . With the Repentance Tower , John Maxwell, 6th Lord Herries of Terregles , had another tower built not far from the castle in the 1560s.
A church at Brydekirk may have been built as early as the 8th century. However, the site of the church has been secure since 1218 at the latest. The current parish church dates from the 19th century.
Brydekirk owned a school in the 1880s. Today the village with the Brydekirk Primary School is the location of a primary school.
traffic
Brydekirk is accessible via a side road from the B723. In the south it connects the village to the A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ). While in the north the A74 (M) ( Glasgow - Gretna ) can be reached within a few kilometers .
In 1765 a crossing of the Annan was created northwest of Brydekirk with the Hoddom Bridge . In the 1810s a second crossing was built on the eastern edge of the village with the Brydekirk Bridge . Today it is of little infrastructural importance.
