Requiem of the Rose King ( Japanese 薔薇 王 の 葬 列 , Bara-Ō no Sōretsu , Eng. "Funeral procession of the Rose King ") is a manga series by Aya Kanno that has been published in Japan since 2013. content

Richard, one of the three sons of the Earl of York, grew up during the Wars of the Roses between the Houses of Lancaster and York. In addition to the intrigues and violent conflicts over the throne of England, the story mainly focuses on Richard, who was born with an intersex body and was always despised by his mother. But his father always loved him and he is also recognized by other family members - and escaped from his identity conflicts in battle. With the help of the Earl of Warwick, Richard's brother Edward takes the throne and Richard becomes Earl. But the son of Henry VI. wants to regain the throne.

publication

The series has been published by Akita Shoten in Akita Shoten magazine since October 4, 2013 (issue 10/2013) . The chapters are also brought out collectively in seven volumes so far. The seventh volume sold about 15,000 times in Japan in the first week.

A German version has been published by Carlsen Manga in seven volumes since March 2018 . An English translation is published by Viz Media , a French by Editions Ki-oon ( Le Requiem du roi des roses ), an Italian by Edizioni Star Comics and a Chinese by Tong Li Publishing in Taiwan.

reception

The critics of Anime News Network and Comicsalliance praise the unusual free implementation of the story based on historical events and the dramas of Shakespeare. With this, the author achieves an examination of gender and sexuality against the background of historical England and the intrigues of the War of the Roses and thus a successful mixture of the templates with typical elements of Shōjo- Manga. When it comes to the topic of gender roles, the series can therefore also be compared with Aya Kanno's older work Otomen , which, however, is set in today's Japan. Fans of the Shakespeare plays or historically correct portrayals might not have much fun with the manga. Rebecca Silverman also praises the detailed graphic implementation, which sometimes creates a fantasy atmosphere, but some backgrounds and page designs are overloaded and the story is therefore not always easy and fluid to read.
