Old and New Residence

The Prince-Bishop's Residence in the old town of Passau extends as a 200-meter-long building complex along the banks of the Inn and opposite the cathedral .

description

The residence consists of the old residence , which today houses the district court, and the new residence . The core of the old residence dates from the 13th century and was restored after the two city fires in 1662 and 1680. The New Residence was built around 1707–1730 according to plans by Domenico d'Angeli and Antonio Beduzzi . The old and new residences are connected by the so-called hall building, which originally housed the prince-bishop's court library and today the cathedral treasury and diocesan museum . The parliament hall on the 2nd floor with a stucco ceiling of the Holzinger school was previously called the papal hall .

In front of the passage under the southern cathedral tower to Zengergasse is the so-called Princely New Building , also called sala terrena because of its terrace garden , which was built by Jacob Pawagner in 1708 and which housed a post office until 2003.

The Passau City Theater is now located in the former prince-bishop's opera house in the west of the complex . The building, originally built as a ballroom in 1645, was used as a court comedy house from 1770 and finally converted into an opera house by Johann Georg Hagenauer in 1783 on the instructions of Prince Bishop von Auersperg .
