The Resolution subglacial highlands comprise a series of high plateaus that are completely covered by continental glacial ice . In the East Antarctic Wilkesland they run in a north-north-west-south-south-east extension and separate the Adventure subglacial ditch from the Wilkes subglacial basin .
The extent of the highlands was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. It is named after the HMS Resolution , flagship of the second expedition (1772–1775) of the British navigator James Cook .
