Retburg

The Retburg is a defunct Niederungsburg on the Leine near today's city of Laatzen in Lower Saxony .

history

According to the excavation findings (excavation from 1974), the construction of the facility in the Leinemasch can probably be dated to the 11th century. It consisted of a double island with the actual fortified tower hill castle (Motte) and a farmyard in front of it. A half-timbered residential storey was possibly placed on top of the defensive tower made of double-shell sand-lime brick brickwork with a diameter of around 15 m. The castle originally served the Hildesheim Monastery as a border fortress against the sphere of influence of the Brunswick dukes and to secure a Leinefurt. In addition, it developed into an administrative center for the office of Müllingen and the Vogtei Grasdorf. The economic area included a farm and a mill.

The castle does not appear in written sources until 1338 in a letter from Aschwin von Alten to the dukes Otto and Wilhelm of Braunschweig and Lüneburg . In 1341, Bishop Heinrich von Hildesheim , who also came from the Welfenhaus, committed himself in a contract with Otto and Wilhelm to demolish the castle within one year. The accessories fell to the Brunswick dukes, with the exception of the Müllingen district and the Grasdorf bailiwick. The stones of the castle tower were probably used for the construction of the bell tower of the Grasdorfer church. Retburg was replaced by Koldingen Castle as a fortress and administrative center .

The von Alten , to whom the castle was last pledged, received three Hufen and 14 acres of land in Rethen , a farm in Grasdorf and the people who formerly belonged to Retburg as a fief in 1347/70 .
