The Reventador ( Spanish for "Platzer") is an active volcano in the eastern Ecuadorian Andes and is difficult to access in the nature park of the same name in the province of Sucumbíos .

It broke out regularly since 1541. On November 3, 2002, after 26 years of inactivity, a sudden eruption occurred. The surrounding villages had to be evacuated and as a result of the immense ash and dust emissions, there were considerable obstructions in the area west of the mountain. Large amounts of the volcanic ash settled on their way west in Quito, 100 km away , and led to the airport being closed for several days. Remnants of the ashes have even been found on the Galápagos Islands , which are more than 1000 km further west.

At the moment (end of March 2016) the Reventador of the four active volcanoes in Ecuador is the one with the highest warning level (orange). On May 12, 2019, the latest eruption began with an ash cloud up to 1 km high.
