Rex Downing (born April 21, 1925 in San Francisco , California ) is a retired American actor.

life and career

Rex Downing began his film career at the age of 10 years with performances at the Little Rascals of Hal Roach . By 1937 he took on minor roles in some of the thugs' films. He first received attention, however, only in 1939 with his portrayal of the young Heathcliff in William Wyler's literary film adaptation Sturmhöhe, based on the novel by Emily Brontë of the same name . In the same year he also played one of the leading roles in the Mandrake film series , the Magican . In King of the Toreros (1941) he played Tyrone Power's main character as a teenager. Shortly before serving in World War II , he received a notable supporting role in The Mayor of 44th Street in 1942 . In 1946 the now grown-up Downing returned to Hollywood, but only got smaller roles. At the end of the 1940s, he withdrew from the film business.

His younger brother Barry Downing (1931-1995) was also active as a child actor. Rex Downing later worked as a teacher near Los Angeles and now lives in Paso Robles, California .
