Rhayader ( Welsh Rhaeadr Gwy , which means waterfall on the Wye ) is a small town (2,000 inhabitants) in the county of Radnorshire in Mid Wales , Great Britain in the valley of the River Wye .

The clock tower in the center of the village was an important stop on the route from Aberystwyth to London in the 19th century .

history

The place was already settled in the Bronze Age. In 1177 a castle was built here by Lord Rhys of Deheubarth , which was further fought over and was burned down in 1231. The Rebecca Riots , peasant revolts against the high taxes and falling producer prices, shook the town between 1839 and 1844.

tourism

The Rhayader, located on the A44 and A470 , is interesting for tourists as a starting point for trips to the scenic Elan Valley , the valley of the Elan River with reservoirs and an adventurous single-lane road to Devil's Bridge . At Gingrin Farm on the outskirts of Rhayader there is a nationwide unique center for the red kites living here .
