The Rhein-Center Cologne , even Rhein-Center Köln-Weiden or Rhein Center Weiden , is a shopping center in Cologne District Lindenthal in the district Weiden , Aachener Strasse no. 1253. It was the beginning of the 1970s built and was the fourth in his opening large shopping center of its kind in the Federal Republic of Germany. At that time, pastures had hardly been built on, so that the image of today's district was dominated by fields and meadows. “Where the sheep grazed almost a year ago, the shopping center is opening today,” wrote the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger on March 9, 1972. Nevertheless, the location was economically promising, as it was on the point of moving from a village to a populous suburb To develop Cologne. The ECE Projektmanagement GmbH , then as now, operators of the Rhine Center, invested 50 million DM in the project.

The Rhein-Center 1972

Originally 60 shops were located in the Rhein-Center, which offered goods in the middle to upper price range. In addition to free parking, services such as car wash and refueling were offered. The dining facilities in the center were also allowed to open on Sundays, and smoking was allowed in the building. There was a kindergarten and a children's paradise with carousels and play equipment. Planned high-rise developments around the shopping center that are already under construction guarantee a solid number of buyers from the immediate catchment area alone. In addition, a direct connection to the S-Bahn was to be created, which was only implemented 30 years later.

The Rhein-Center today

Over time, the number of stores has increased to 180 (as of January 2016). After renovation and expansion measures in 1995 and 2008, the Rhein-Center currently has a sales area of 40,000 m², which is spread over three levels. The industry mix is dominated by textiles and hardware. A separate catering area was built in the basement. From the original tenants from 1972 only Galeria Kaufhof and the Stadtsparkasse remain, family-friendly facilities such as the children's paradise have been abolished due to cost-cutting measures. In contrast to the previous approach, parking became chargeable after 30 minutes. The shopping center has 1250 employees, the operator puts the core catchment area at 37,500 and the entire catchment area at over 1.3 million inhabitants.
