Life

Gerhard Raab: nude study , steel (Graz, 2016)

Gerhard Raab grew up in his native Graz. After completing his school education, he first studied art history at the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, recognized his interest in design and then decided to actively work as an artist. From 1993 to 1997 he studied graphics and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Professor Gunter Damisch and graduated with a diploma in graphics and painting. He then studied sculpture at the Vienna Art Academy from 1997 to 2001 under Professor Bruno Gironcoli , which he completed in 2001 with a diploma in sculpture.

Raab works as a freelance artist . In addition, he works in Graz as a teacher in the field of art at the Bundes- and Bundesrealgymnasium Kirchengasse and also holds teaching assignments at the University of Education in Styria and the Church University of Education .

Raab is a minimalist in his artistic work . According to the Graz culture journalist Barbara Jernej (including Kulturzeitung 80 , Graz), he tries to achieve “maximum tension with minimal form” ; the task of art for him is reduction. Raab approaches his subject in two different approaches: while his graphics and gestural drawings  - objects made of iron wire - " follow the principle of informal art ", especially in his more recent works, "a tendency towards formal conceptions can be recognized ". During his creative process, Raab is about “not imagining anything for as long as possible and remaining open to anything”. According to Jernej, this results in a “special contrast” - his “works appear spontaneous, although they are the result of a long and often exhausting creation process”.

According to von Raab, he believes that art should irritate people, change habitual thought patterns and enrich awareness. He justifies its importance for people with the idea that art is the only possibility "to tear the ground away from under people's feet in a world where everything already exists". His art should therefore “not provide answers, but rather raise new questions”.

Since 1976 Raab has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. His work has been awarded several prizes. He is a member of the IG Bildende Kunst .

Gerhard Raab lives and works in Graz.
