history

There has been a ferry connection across the Rhine on the politically and strategically important section of the river between Walsum and Orsoy for several centuries .

The Klevian Orsoy rose to the status of a town around 1270/1285 and was confirmed in 1347 and was fortified in several construction phases over the following centuries. The development of the Rheinberg in the Electorate of Cologne, which was made a city by Neuss law as early as 1233 , proceeded almost in parallel. The establishment of a customs post in 1238/40 for Orsoy is documented, at which a kind of river escort was levied by the Counts and Dukes of Kleve since 1279 . Around 1445, this actually represented a special tariff on goods in the Electorate of Cologne during the Soest feud (1444–1450).

There is evidence that the Archbishops of Cologne levied a Rhine toll for Rheinberg from 1235 onwards.

The ferry connection across the Rhine in the Walsum area has existed for 360 years. There has been a fast shuttle service since 1831 .

Initially, the ship was pulled across the river against the current by a horse and up to six ferrymen . The crossing took between half an hour and a full hour.

Ferry

The ferry "Glück Auf" is the first motorized Rhine ferry on the section between Walsum and Orsoy. She has been commuting between the two sides of the Rhine since 1958. The Walsum mining company had the ship built. Above all, it was supposed to bring the workers to the Walsumer colliery quickly every now and then.

The ferry can move 60 tons with its three 80 hp motors each. Thanks to the special Voith Schneider drive , it is exceptionally manoeuvrable and can travel over the Rhine at a maximum of nine kilometers per hour in five to eight minutes. With a draft of no more than one meter, the ferry is ready for use at any water level .

In the winter of 2010/2011, the ferry's engines were replaced with low-emission machines.
