The Rhenish Mission Church in Walvis Bay is a church built in 1880 in Walvis Bay in western Namibia . It has been a National Monument since November 24, 1972 .

The church was used as a mission church until the beginning of 1966, before the mission moved to a new building in Kuisebmond . The mission church, which was brought to Walvis Bay by ship from Germany, became increasingly neglected over the years and was about to be demolished. The Lions Club acquired the property, took over the restoration and was able to preserve the building.

The missionaries Julius and Justus Morgenschweis, two brothers from Niederfischbach in Siegerland , had been working for the ecumenically oriented Rhenish Mission in Walvis Bay since 1892. Father Julius led the Roman Catholic mission, his brother Justus looked after the community and provided for its maintenance by building a distillery so that the mission could earn income.

construction

The mission church in Walvis Bay is one of the few churches in Namibia that was built almost entirely using building materials from abroad, especially from Hamburg . At the time, it was the only structure in Namibia that was built exclusively from imported wood. In 1891 the church was expanded.

In 1918 the church was demolished for a move, as the land was to be used for the expansion of the Walvis Bay port . The church was rebuilt in its current location.
