The SV Rheinland Mayen 1914 eV is a German football club based in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Mayen in the district of Mayen-Koblenz and the oldest football club in the city.

history

The club was founded in May 1914 as FC Rheinland Mayen . After the outbreak of the First World War , however, gaming operations did not come to a standstill for the time being. After the end of the war, the club was then accepted into the West German game association and took part in the A-class, a little later then also succeeded in promotion to the district league. The pure football club then became an athletics and hockey department into a club made up of several sports, so the name of the club was changed to SV Rheinland Mayen . Some time later a tennis department was added.

The soccer team then belonged to the Mittelrhein District League from 1926 to 1929 , from which the team then rose to the first-class Gauliga in 1931 with coach Karl Höger . In 1937 the National Socialists ordered the merger of the Turnverein 1886 Mayen and the SV Rheinland Mayen . The playing strength of the teams weakened this rather than that it would have strengthened them, so in the following seasons they only played lower class.

post war period

After the end of the war there was another board meeting in 1947 to breathe new life into the association. The first soccer team then managed to move up from the district class to the second-class Landesliga Rheinland within three years . With 27:29 points here in the middle season with 27:29 points and eighth place, a good positioning in the midfield was achieved. Also at the end of the 1940s, a boxing department was founded within the club, to which the actor Mario Adorf also belonged for a while.

After the 1950/51 season , the new third-rate amateur league Rhineland was introduced. Only the first five clubs in the middle season could qualify for this. With 17th place this did not succeed, so the club had to play in the 2nd amateur league from the next season. For the 1956/57 season , however, the promotion to the now two-track amateur league finally succeeded. In the following years you could always place yourself in the upper ranks, but after the 1960/61 season it went over the last place in the table with only 7:41 points back down to the 2nd amateur league.

Change of name and return to the association league

In 1964 he was relegated to the A-class, but after two years of abstinence he was promoted to the district league again. In order to support a local company, the name of the club was changed to SV Rheinland-Eifelland Mayen in 1970 . As a result, the club received numerous financial donations and the players were also supported in this way. The sponsorship only lasted until 1972, after which the club name was withdrawn.

In 1974, Rhineland-Mayen was the only club from the Rhein / Ahr soccer district to be divided into the West District League. In the following years you always played with the front, but never made it up. For the 1978/79 season the divisions were then redistributed and the Rhinelander were now part of the Landesliga Süd . In the first few years, it was the only club from the region with a lack of spectator interest that struggled and sometimes only just barely managed to stay in the league. At the beginning of the 1980s, however, the performance got better and at the end of the 1980/81 season it was finally possible to win the championship.

Decline and an invalid player pass

In the association league, however, the required level of play that was actually necessary for the division could not be shown. So it went back down to the national league after just one season. The dwindling number of players continued here, when there was also bad luck with injuries, at the end of the 1984/85 season the relegation to the district league center could no longer be prevented. However, it should not be over by then, the class could not be maintained again by young but still inexperienced players and it went down to the A-class.

In 1989, this was followed by a descent to the B-Class. From this, however, succeeded immediately after a season, the direct rise. At least it was decided in terms of sport. After a complaint by the DJK Baar against the club due to an incorrect date of birth on the player pass of a teammate of the first team, the pass was declared invalid by a sports court. This means that the club was deprived of all points from games in which the player had been used. Instead of being promoted to the A-class, the club even had to relegate to the C-class. After a pardon from the chairman of the association, the team was at least allowed to stay in the B-class, the second team was then promoted to the C-class.

Untouched by the events in the previous season, the championship title was achieved in the following season without any problems and with it the promotion to the A-class. In the 1993/94 season, the promotion to the district league was to be tackled, but this did not succeed due to the departures of several players and the team even had to relegate to the B class, where the class could only just be held become. The promotion back to the district league A should then succeed after the 1996/97 season. You could hold out here for a relatively long time, but due to several upheavals in the team, there was never any further promotion. At the end of the 2002/03 season, things went back down to the B-Class.

Current time

Only at the end of the 2006/07 season succeeded with 66 points again the championship in the district league B and thus the promotion. From this you had to say goodbye after the 2008/09 season with only 13 points as the bottom of the table. It should take some time until the next promotion, only after the 2015/16 season won the championship with 64 points and thus the return to the district league A. This division is still part of the club today.
