The Rheinsberger See (also Great Rheinsberger See ) is located in the north of Brandenburg in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district . In terms of landscape, it belongs to the Mecklenburg Lake District , which has its southern border here. The lake is traversed by the Rhin and is part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park .
The places Hohenelse , Schlaborn and Warenthin are right on the lake . Although the body of water bears the name of the city of Rheinsberg , it and the well-known Rheinsberg Castle are not located directly on the lake, but a little south of the Grienericksee , with which the Rheinsberger See is connected by the canal-like Rhin. Another canal connection exists to the north to Schlabornsee near Zechlinerhütte . The connection of the lakes with the canals and locks within the Mecklenburg Lake District enables direct boat trips from Rheinsberg to the North Sea . The water level of the lake, which is up to 29 meters deep, is 55.5 m above sea level. NHN .
Almost in the center of the lake is the island of Remus , whose prehistoric finds indicate an early settlement of the region. In the course of the state development of the young Margraviate of Brandenburg , a - no longer existing - German castle was built on the island in the 13th century in the area of an older Slavic complex. The assumption of various archaeologists that the legendary Slavic sanctuary Rethra could have been on the island has not yet been confirmed.
The Rheinsberger See is part of the Rheinsberger Gewässer, a so-called other inland waterway of the federal government. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .
