The Grienericksee is located in the north of Brandenburg in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district . In terms of landscape, it belongs to the Rheinsberg Lake District . The lake is traversed by the Rhin and is part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park .
Although the body of water does not bear the name of the city of Rheinsberg , it and the famous Rheinsberg Castle are located here and not on the Rheinsberger See , with which the Grienericksee is connected by the canal-like Rhin. The connection of the lake with the established canals and locks within the Mecklenburg Lake District enables direct boat passage from Rheinsberg to the North Sea . The water level of the lake, which is up to 14 meters deep, is 55.4 m above sea level. NHN and is regulated by the weir at the Obermühle in Rheinsberg. The Rhin leaves the Grienericksee there as a largely natural brook (“Rheinsberger Rhin”) and is only navigable for pleasure craft again from the Zermützelsee . The upper reaches of the Rheinsberger Rhin may only be used in canoes in exceptional cases; regular navigability only begins again in Zippelsförde .
The Grienericksee is part of the Rheinsberg waters, a so-called other inland waterway of the federal government. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .
