Thanatephorus cucumeris is a species of mushroom from the group of mushrooms that is widespread worldwide. Its asexual form ( anamorphic ) Rhizoctonia solani triggers fungal diseases in a large number of plants.

In sugar beet it causes "late beet rot", in potatoes "whiteness". The latter is also called "potato pox" or "root killer disease" and is a foot disease of the potato . The disease is caused by black smallpox on the tuber or in the soil. They form the permanent survival form of the fungus (sclerotia).

If a stand emerges with gaps and unevenly after a cold and wet spring, there is a suspicion of an infestation by white hosiness. When examining the defects, dead potato sprouts can be found just below the surface of the soil. This clinical picture occurs when diseased tubers with black, scratchable smallpox are planted out. If the fungus attacks mainly from the ground, the image of "tree-top rolling" arises, especially in dry conditions. In damp conditions, a dense, white fungal network can often be found at the base of the stem.

Measures to reduce infestation in potatoes

  • Use healthy, smallpox-free seedlings ,
  • Avoiding too early and too deep laying,
  • Pickling the tubers when sorting or in the planter ,
  • Occasional application of fungicides in the early stages of development of the potato plants.
