Albert Bernhard Frank
Albert Bernhard Frank (born January 17, 1839 in Dresden , † September 27, 1900 in Berlin ) was a Saxon , German biologist . The word mycorrhiza was first used by Frank. The Frankia alni bacterium is named after him. Its botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " ABFrank ".
Life
From 1861 Frank studied natural sciences and mainly botany with Georg Heinrich Mettenius and Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach at the University of Leipzig . After receiving his doctorate in 1865, he became curator of the university herbarium there, and his habilitation took place in 1867. The terms transversal geotropism and transversal heliotropism come from him . In 1880 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . Since 1881 he has been researching as a professor for plant physiology at the Agricultural University Berlin on the binding of atmospheric nitrogen through symbioses between prokaryotes and higher plants . Since he and his colleagues made more and more discoveries in plant pathology in the following years, he renamed his position the "Institute for Plant Physiology and Plant Protection".
Investigations into diseases of sweet cherries, beets, grains and potatoes made him a name not only in the scientific world. He was known for making the results of his research quickly usable for agriculture and forestry . His advisory activity in the field of plant protection was also the beginning of an institutionalization of this task in the developing plant protection offices.
