The Rhodopygia geijskesi is one of the five dragonfly species of the genus Rhodopygia from the subfamily Sympetrinae . It occurs from the northern provinces of Brazil , Amazonas and Pará via Venezuela to Suriname and Guyana . The species was first described in 1964 by Belle using an animal from Surinam. It is named in honor of Dirk Cornelis Geijskes .

Construction of the Imago

The abdomen measures between 30 and 33 millimeters in males. In females, it is a little shorter and measures 27 to 31 millimeters. While this part of the body is red in males, it is brownish yellow in females. The thorax is greenish in both sexes. While the labium and the upper lip ( labrum ) are yellowish or yellowish-brown, the adjoining frontal plate ( clypeus ) and the forehead are red. The hind wings measure between 35 and 40 millimeters in the males, while the length in the females varies less strongly with 34 to 37 millimeters. The reddish brown wing mark ( pterostigma ), on the other hand, fluctuates somewhat more in the females and measures 3.5 to 4.0 millimeters, while it measures 3.5 to 3.8 millimeters in the males. The otherwise common spot in the genus at the base of the wings is missing in the females on the hind wing and is also only weakly pronounced in the males. On the female forewings, however, there is a yellowish shadow at the base.

The species is very similar to the Erythemis haematogastra .
