Riachão (2010)

Riachão (born November 14, 1921 in Salvador (Bahia) as Clementino Rodrigues ; † March 30, 2020 ibid) was a Brazilian samba musician and composer. Along with Batatinha (Oscar da Penha), Walmir Lima, Ederaldo Gentil, Nélson Rufino and Edil Pacheco, he is one of the most important historical samba composers in Bahia .

Life

Riachão was already singing at the age of 9 at “Serenatas”, on birthdays or with friends from his neighborhood. He played the samba rhythm on cans filled with water. He made the first composition at the age of 12, an untitled samba that said: “Eu sei que sou moleque, eu sei, conheço o meu proceder / Deixe o dia raiar que a minha turma, ela é boa para batucar” (I know , I'm a kid, I know, I know my way / Let the day break for my friends, they are good at making music).

He was first known nationally as a singer through radio in the 1940s and 1950s. Riachão's songs have been interpreted by many well-known Brazilian singers: Jackson do Pandeiro recorded Meu Patrão, Saia and Judas Traidor in Rio de Janeiro , Cássia Eller Vá Morar com o Diabo, and Caetano Veloso had a success with his song Cada Macaco no seu Galho. He also worked in the films A Grande Feira ( Roberto Pires , 1961) and Os Pastores da Noite (German: The Shepherds of the Night, Marcel Camus , 1975).

Cinematic reception

In 2001 the documentary Samba Riachão by the Brazilian director Jorge Alfredo was released. It reports on the life of Riachão and shows the changes in the Brazilian music market in the 20th century based on his story.
