Ricardo Olmos Romera studied Classical Philology at the Complutense University in Madrid . After graduating, he was employed at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional de España and, from 1973–1974, was entrusted by Martín Almagro Basch to reorganize the collection of Greek vases . Almagro Basch arranged for Ricardo Olmos a scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute , which led him to study Greek ceramics, religion and iconography at the University of Würzburg with Erika Simon .

In 1975 he returned to the museum. In 1976 the doctorate took place . The topic of his dissertation was Contribución al estudio de las cerámicas áticas del Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Aportaciones iconográficas y estilísticas ("Contribution to the study of Attic ceramics in the National Archaeological Museum. Iconographic and stylistic contributions") - fruit of his research with Erika Simon. At the National Museum he was appointed deputy curator in 1976 and full curator in 1979 . Here he was responsible for the department of Greek antiquity and related cultures in the Aegean and the Etruscan-Italian region. From 1979 to 1982 he was also secretary of the museum.

In 2003 he was appointed professor at the Centro de Estudios Históricos of the CSIC. From 2006 until his retirement in 2011, he took over the management of the Escuela Española de Historia y Arquelogía en Roma , a foreign institute of the CSIC based in Rome .

Ricardo Olmos was a founding member and member of the scientific advisory board of the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae . He was also Spain's representative on the scientific advisory board of the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum . His research interests are widespread and cover almost all aspects of ancient culture. He deserves special credit for his knowledge of a genuinely Iberian iconography in the context of ancient cultures - an area in which Ricardo Olmos is doing pioneering work.
