House Dehmel

The Richard-Dehmel-Haus (also Dehmelhaus) is located in Blankenese , Hamburg , Richard-Dehmel-Straße 1. The poet Richard Dehmel moved into the building designed by the Hamburg architect Walther Baedeker with his wife Ida in 1912. Baedeker built the house at his own expense in order to prevent the poet's threatened departure from Blankenese. A year later, friends and admirers gave Richard Dehmel the gift of the house, which was initially rented, for his 50th birthday.

In the context of reform architecture , the tall, angular building with a steep roof and high terrace was created according to plans by Dehmel and Baedeker , on the south side of which there is a girl sculpture by the Viennese sculptor Richard Luksch . In contrast to what is usual in Hamburg, it is not brick but ocher-colored plaster that determines the appearance of the house. Richard Dehmel had designed furniture as early as 1901 and slightly modernized it for the house. He found inspiration in artists such as Peter Behrens and Henry van de Velde . Emil Orlik designed the wallpaper.

The later vacant house, the structure of which and the remaining furniture were badly damaged, was saved by the establishment of the Dehmelhaus Foundation in 2013 for the 150th birthday of the poet, and the planning for a fundamental renovation in line with historic monuments was possible. It was fully financed by the Hermann Reemtsma Foundation from 2014 to 2016 . A tour of the house is possible for registered visitors. The house and its inventory are under monument protection.
