Richard Allen Morris has developed an independent painterly oeuvre for almost four decades away from the art world, reflecting the various trends of the last few decades in paintings and objects. in recent years his art has been increasingly noticed and collected. The self-taught artist's early painting emerged in the context of Abstract Expressionism , later he took up impulses from specifically Californian Pop Art , such as Ed Ruscha . His paintings, some of which are ironically charged, move between abstraction and representationalism, in groups of motifs that have been tried and tested over the years - Heads , Jaws , Ray Guns - he takes painting with color reliefs and material images to the limit of object art. Morris has had an intense influence on younger, more prominent painters such as David Reed , and is appreciated by colleagues such as John Baldessari . In 2004 the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, organized a retrospective for him.
