Richard Arkless

Richard Arkless (born July 7, 1975 in Stranraer ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Arkless was born in Stranraer in 1975. He and his family moved to East London and back to Stranraer when he was eight. Arkless attended the city schools there and then studied economics at Glasgow Caledonian University , which he left with a bachelor's degree . He then moved to Strathclyde University , where he earned a law degree. Arkless was admitted to the Glasgow Graduate School of Law . After training as a solicitor in a law firm in Edinburgh , Arkless moved to the English county of Cheshire and was approved as a solicitor in England and Wales . From 2013 he worked as a freelancer in Stranraer. Arkless is married and has a father of two.

Political career

In the 2015 British general election , Arkless ran for the SNP in his home constituency of Dumfries and Galloway . He stood up against Labor MP Russell Brown , who represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since its inception in 2005 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Arkless achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he was a member of the legal committee.

With a loss of votes, Arkless lost his mandate to the conservative Alister Jack in the early general election in 2017 .
