Russell Leslie Brown (* 17th September 1951 in Annan ) is a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Brown grew up in Annan. After finishing school, including attending the Annan Academy , he worked for ICI for 23 years , where he joined the Transport and General Workers' Union . He lives in Annan with his wife Christine . The couple have two daughters, Sarah and Gillian .

Political career

As a result of his union involvement, Brown joined the Labor Party in 1978. In the 1980s and 1990s he represented the party on the Dumfries and Galloway Council . In the 1997 general election, Brown ran for the first time to national elections. He applied for the mandate of his home constituency Dumfries . He prevailed against the conservative Struan Stevenson , among others, and secured the Labor Party the mandate of this constituency, whose history goes back to 1708 for the first time.

In the following general election in 2001 Brown held his mandate and was able to increase his share of the vote by 1.4% to 48.9%. During this term, Brown was first appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chairman of the House of Lords , Gareth Wyn Williams, Baron Williams of Mostyn . As a result of the Iraq policy, however, Brown gave up this position in 2003, like various other Labor MPs.

In the course of the constituency revision, the constituency Dumfries was dissolved at the end of the electoral term. Brown ran therefore in the 2005 elections in the newly created constituency Dumfries and Galloway , in which large parts of the old constituency were absorbed. Among other things, he prevailed against the conservative Peter Duncan , whom he was able to relegate to second place in the 2010 general election . Brown again received a position as Parliamentary Private Secretary, this time in the Scotland Ministry successively under the ministers Alistair Darling , Douglas Alexander and Des Browne .

After the SNP gained massive votes , Brown lost his parliamentary seat in the following general election in 2015 and left the British House of Commons. The mandate went to the SNP candidate Richard Arkless .
