Richard Bühler (manufacturer)

Richard Bühler (born May 28, 1879 in Winterthur ; † May 14, 1967 there ) was a Swiss textile manufacturer, art collector and patron .

Life

Bühler was born the son of a textile industrialist and his wife in Winterthur, where he also attended school. In 1905 he married Margrit Steiner. He completed his training in his parents' company as well as in Germany, England and the USA. After his father's death, he and his brother Hermann Bühler (1870–1926) ran the spinning company Hermann Bühler & Co. in Winterthur.

He came into contact with modern French art through the Swiss painter and art mediator Carl Montag . In 1907 he was a board member and from 1913 to 1938 president of the Winterthurer Kunstverein. From 1913 to 1915 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission . From 1935 to 1941 he was president of the Swiss Art Association and from 1925 to 1946 of the Swiss Werkbund . Because of his work, the Winterthurer Kunstverein was one of the first to acquire modern art. In 1916, Bühler sponsored the opening of the Winterthur Art Museum . In his private life he worked as a garden architect and designer.

In the 1930s, he sold his collection, which focused on French art, for financial reasons.
