Richard Cobb
Richard Cobb CBE (born May 20, 1917 in Frinton-on-Sea , Essex , † January 15, 1996 in Abingdon , Oxfordshire ) was an English historian. He is considered "the greatest British historian of France" of the 20th century.
Life
Cobb got to know France in the 1930s and was fascinated by the country. After the end of the Second World War , he lived in France for nine years. During this time he was supported by friends from the French Communist Party PCF and taught English to Air France stewardesses .
Teaching
1955 to 1961 he was a visiting lecturer at Aberystwyth University . In 1962 he came to Balliol College in Oxford as a Fellow and Tutor in Modern History . Cobb was Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford from 1973 to 1984 . His specialty was the time of the French Revolution .
Family life
Cobb was married to Margaret Tennant in third marriage since 1963 and had three sons and a daughter.
Awards and honors
- In 1967 he became a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .
- In 1976 he became Officier des Ordre national du Mérite , 1984 Knight of the Legion of Honor .
- In 1978 he became Commander of the British Empire.
- In 1979 he was awarded the Wolfson History Prize .
