Richard Estes (paleontologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Estes (* 1932 ; † 1990 ) was an American vertebrate paleontologist specializing in fossil reptiles . He was a professor at the University of California, San Diego .

Estes has published over 100 scientific papers. He dealt with the phylogenetic systematics of different groups of reptiles (such as lizards ), amphibians (such as frogs and salamanders) and fish and also with the paleoecology of life worlds that range from the Jurassic to the Miocene .

In 1990 he received the Romer-Simpson Medal of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. He was editor of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

In 1990 Philip Currie and his colleagues Rigby and Sloan named a predatory dinosaur of the Upper Cretaceous after Estes ( Ricardoestesia ), of which only teeth are known. Estes himself investigated the Lance Formation of the Upper Cretaceous of Wyoming, famous for its wealth of fossils of dinosaurs and other vertebrates, in the early 1960s . He also described Cretaceous lower vertebrate fossils from the Upper Cretaceous of the Hell Creek Formation of Montana, which is also famous for dinosaur finds, and from the early Cretaceous Spain.
