Richard K. Franklin (born January 15, 1936 in Marylebone , London ) is a British actor and politician .

life and career

In 1963 Franklin started his acting training at the RADA ( Royal Academy of Dramatic Art ). After graduating from school, he first worked for an advertising agency. He then appeared in plays by William Shakespeare at the Century Theater. In 1964 he had his first minor television appearance in the television series Crossroad. Two years later he appeared in an episode of the television series Dixon of Dock Green . Several appearances at the Repertory Theater in Birmingham followed. From 1971 to 1974 Franklin starred as Captain Mike Yates in Doctor Who . While this role was initially only intended as a minor role, the figure became more and more important and is now regarded as the doctor's companion . Franklin had his last appearance in Doctor Who for the time being in the episode Planet of the Spiders . After that he was only seen as Mike Yates in the specials The Five Doctors and Dimensions in Time . In Emmerdale Farm , Franklin played the villain Denis Rigg in 36 episodes.

In addition to appearing in films, television, and theater, Franklin is also a screenwriter and director. For example, in 2011 he directed Charlie's Aunt and wrote a book called Killing Stone . One character from the novel Killing Stone is Franklin's Doctor Who character Mike Yates. Franklin will read the audio book himself. Franklin also runs his own theater company. He is also politically active. For example, he was a member of a referendum party .
