Life

Friese was born the son of a government official. After attending school at the age of 14, he first worked as a clerk at the district administration and later at the magistrate in his native city. He turned to painting and, against his parents' wishes, left home at the age of 16. In Berlin, he started training as a lithographer at the Winckelmann & Söhne lithographic company . At the same time he attended the teaching institute of the arts and crafts museum there . He spent this apprenticeship together with the later very well-known humorous Berlin draftsman Heinrich Zille .

During his apprenticeship in Berlin, he lived with his older brother and his wife, who supported the budding artist with advice and action. With their help, he was able to begin studying at the Berlin Art Academy in 1877 . Just three years later he was able to open his own studio in Berlin. Intensive private tuition with masters of the art of painting such as Paul Meyerheim and Karl Steffeck , who later succeeded Ludwig Rosenfelder as director of the Königsberg Art Academy , rounded off Friese's training as a painter.

In 1892 Friese was appointed to the Prussian Academy of the Arts and appointed professor in 1896. In 1897 he received a large gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition . He made trips to Syria and Palestine , Norway , Svalbard and Canada .
