Richard Napier Luce, Baron Luce , KG , GCVO , PC , DL (born October 14, 1936 in Westminster ) was Lord Chamberlain of the Household of Queen Elizabeth from 2000 to 2006 . Before that, he was governor of Gibraltar , sat for the Conservative Party in parliament and was a minister in government.

Early career

He was born in Westminster and attended Wellington College (Berkshire) and Christ's College (Cambridge) . He did his military service in Cyprus from 1955 to 1958 . From 1960 to 1962 he worked in the civil service as a district officer in Kenya . He then worked at Gallaher Ltd from 1963 to 1965 as a product manager and then joined Spirella as a marketing manager. From 1968 to 1971 he was General Manager of the National Innovation Center.

From 1972 to 1979 he was a board member of IFA Consultants Ltd and at the same time Selenex Ltd (1973–79) and Courtenay Stewart International (1975–79).

Political career

Richard Luce was first elected to the House of Commons in a 1971 mid-term election for the constituency of Arundel and Shoreham . After a redesign of the constituencies in 1974, in which this constituency was omitted, he moved into parliament for the constituency of Shoreham . After the British general election in 1992 , he withdrew from parliament.

In 1972 he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary by the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. After the Conservative Party lost a majority in the 1972 election, he became a whip for the opposition.

When the Conservatives came back to power in the 1979 British general election, he became Parliamentary Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Departments. In 1981 he was appointed Minister of State in the same department. In 1982 he resigned, along with his boss, Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington , because of the Falklands War . He had been criticized from various quarters for allegedly sending the wrong signals to Argentina that Britain would not respond to a possible invasion. In 1983, however, he returned to his post as Minister of State. In 1985 he moved to the office of Lord President of the Council as Minister of Culture , his last cabinet position. He gave up the post in 1990.

He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1991 and has been a member of the Privy Council since 1986 .

After leaving parliament

Sir Richard Luce was Vice Chancellor of the University of Buckingham from 1992 to 1996 . In 1997 he became governor of Gibraltar and held the office until 2000. In 2000 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Luce , of Adur in the County of West Sussex, and thereby became a member of the House of Lords . In 2000 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and became Lord Chamberlain in the royal household.

He resigned from his post as Lord Chamberlain on October 11, 2006. His successor was The Earl Peel .

In 2008 he was a Knight Companion (KG) in the Order of the Garter was added (Order of the Garter), the highest order of knighthood in the United Kingdom.

On April 26, 2012 it was announced that Lord Luce had been appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron as a member of the commission to appoint the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury .

Lord Luce is President of the Voluntary Arts Network .

He has two sons, Alexander Luce and Edward Luce .
