William Peel, 3rd Earl Peel

William James Robert Peel, 3rd Earl Peel GCVO PC DL (born October 3, 1947 ) is a British nobleman who currently holds the office of Lord Chamberlain of the Household .

Life

He is the son of Arthur Peel, 2nd Earl Peel (1901-1969) and, as his Heir Apparent, had been the courtesy title Viscount Clanfield since birth . In 1969 he inherited his father as Earl Peel .

He first attended Ampleforth College , then spent a semester at the University of Tours in France before studying at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester . In 1973 he married Veronica Naomi Timpson. The marriage, which was divorced in 1987, has two children, Ashton Peel, Viscount Clanfield (* 1976) and Lady Iona Peel (* 1978).

Since 1989 he has been married to the Hon. Charlotte Clementine Soames, daughter of Christopher Soames, Baron Soames and his wife Mary , for the second time . His wife is a granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill . The daughter Lady Antonia Peel (* 1991) comes from this marriage.

Public offices

Since he became Earl Peel in 1969, he has been a hereditary member of the House of Lords as a Crossbencher . After the House of Lords reform in 1999 , he was elected as a member of the House of Lords.

From 1993 to 2006 he was Lord Warden of the Stannaries on the Advisory Board of Prince Charles , which is responsible for the Duchy of Cornwall . He has also served on the boards of various British conservation organizations and was Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire in 1998 .

Earl Peel has been Lord Chamberlain of the Household, the chief official of the British Court, since October 2006 . The function corresponds to that of the chamberlain or court marshal . It is to be distinguished from the office of Lord Great Chamberlain , who as one of the Great Officers of State is a civil servant. He is the successor to Richard Luce, Baron Luce . At the same time he was accepted as a Knight Grand Cross in the Royal Victorian Order . He has been a member of the Privy Council since November 2006 . He also became Chancellor of the Royal Victorian Order.
