Sir Walter Raleigh was a Lord Warden of the Stannaries

The Lord Warden of the Stannaries (from the Latin stannum for tin, Sn , guardian of the tin mines) formerly had military and legal duties in the Duchy of Cornwall , England , United Kingdom . It is now a purely ceremonial office, but he is still considered the highest-ranking official in the duchy and is therefore also a member of the Prince's Council . He is the official who convenes on behalf of the British monarch or the Duke of Cornwall . The last Stannary Parliament was convened by the Lord Warden of the Stannaries in 1753.

The great importance of the office also depends on tin mining in the counties of Cornwall and Devon . Some of the oldest laws in British law include those governing tin mining and specific jurisdiction for tin miners.

The first Lord Warden of the Stannaries of Cornwall and Devon was William of Wrotham , who was appointed in the reign of Richard the Lionheart on November 20, 1197. In the Middle Ages a separate incumbent was appointed for the counties of Cornwall and Devon. In the Middle Ages he acted as a steward for the goods of the duchy in the respective counties. In 1502 Robert, 2nd Lord Willoughby de Broke was appointed Lord Steward for the duchies in Cornwall and Devon, Lord Warden of the Stannaries in Cornwall and Devon and Master Forester of Dartmoor. The current incumbent is Nicholas Bacon.
