philosophy

According to Herbert, religion is entirely a matter of reason ( deism ). This aims to be primarily in the service of morality. According to his argumentation, the human being can only focus on being human as an individual if morality is the focus of life. With this idea he is a classic representative of natural religion . He is considered the founder of the 5 basic principles of natural religion, which he called veritates catholicae .

The 5 basic principles of natural religion

  1. The acceptance of a higher being
  2. The duty of worship
  3. A moral way of life
  4. Sins and offenses must be repented and atone for
  5. Rewarding and punishing good and bad after death

These five basic principles are equally accessible to all people through their reason and can be grasped by natural instinct.
