Richard Rosenberg (born March 5, 1894 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 12, 1987 in Stans ) was a German composer, music theorist, music journalist, conductor, pianist and lawyer of Jewish descent.

education

Rosenberg studied music (piano, violin and composition with Bernhard Sekles ) at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt while still at high school . At the request of his father, however, he initially completed training in law at the universities of Munich and Marburg. In 1914 he enlisted in the military as a war volunteer. After various hospital stays, he returned four years later to the legal department of the University of Frankfurt. While he was Dr. jur. with a thesis “On the altruistic motive in criminal law”, he went public with his first compositions. Now he was allowed to follow his inner calling and study composition with Waldemar von Baußnern at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.

Musical creation

First engagements as a conductor and répétiteur in Mainz (1922) and Oberhausen (1924) also offered the opportunity to perform his own orchestral works (including drama music, pantomimes). The highpoints of his composing career were the world premieres of his two operas, Der Geiger von Gmünd in Dortmund in 1926 and Liebesspiel in Aachen in 1929 . He then compensated for his first artistic crises with journalistic activities at the Frankfurter Zeitung .

In March 1938, after the Hitler regime had withdrawn his work permit, Rosenberg fled via Italy (Cannobio) to Switzerland to Hergiswil (NW) . His wife Paula, née Lind, with whom he had been married since 1925, had to live in Frankfurt a. M. and was deported to Minsk on November 11, 1941, where he was murdered.

Rosenberg lived in Switzerland for 50 long years in the greatest seclusion and dedicated himself primarily to the composition of choir, chamber and brass music. The Luzerner Tagblatt now benefited from his many years of experience as a music reviewer for the Frankfurter Zeitung . In addition, he published music theory treatises on the piano sonatas by Beethoven (1957) and Mozart (1972).

Works

Rosenberg's oeuvre with around 70 compositions ranges from opera to choral, orchestral and chamber music to brass music. His works, kept in the style of romantic classicism , captivate with their rich polyphonic writing, melodically soft tone paintings and fresh scherzo-like ideas.
