Richard Ryan (diplomat)

Richard Ryan (* 1946 in Dublin ) is an Irish diplomat .

Ryan attended Oatlands College and studied at University College Dublin . From 1973 he began to work in the Irish Foreign Office. During his diplomatic career, he held various positions. Among other things, he worked at the Irish Embassy in Tokyo from 1974 to 1977 , worked at the Irish Mission to the European Communities from 1980 to 1982 and finally worked at the Irish Embassy in London from 1983 to 1989 . In 1989 he was ambassador to South Korea , from 1994 to 1998 ambassador to Spain with simultaneous accreditation in Andorra , Algeria and Tunisia . Ryan then became the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in New York City , an office he held from 1998 to 2005. During this time he was Ireland's representative on the United Nations Security Council from 2001 to 2002 and served as chair of the UN Security Council Angola (UNITA) Sanctions Committee .

In October 2005 Ryan became the Irish Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative of Ireland to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons . He held both positions until 2009, when he was replaced by Mary Whelan . From 2009 to 2011 he was ambassador to the Czech Republic .

Ryan is married with three children.
