Richard Süßmeier (born August 22, 1930 in Munich ; † November 30, 2020 ) was a German hotelier , restaurateur and host of the Oktoberfest . From 1958 to 1984 he was the host of the Armbrustschützenzelt and from 1970 spokesman for the Oktoberfest hosts .

Life

The parents were also Süßmeiers hosts and operated in Munich , first the Kapuzinereck on Baldeplatz in Munich and then the Straubinger Hof am Viktualienmarkt . Born in Munich, he attended a secondary school and completed an internship in the inn's butcher's shop in the Rheinhof in 1953 and 1954. This was followed by a one-year course at the hotel management school in Bad Reichenhall . As a trained innkeeper and hotelier, he has been running his parents' business Straubinger Hof as a junior host since his father's death in 1948. Shortly thereafter, his two brothers died.

In 1958 he acquired the then relatively small crossbow rifle tent at the Oktoberfest, which he systematically built up into a large company within a few years. At the same time he became the spokesman for the Oktoberfest hosts and was considered a horror of the Munich district administration department and the Bavarian State Chancellery .

In 1984 he caused a local political scandal when he made fun of the then district administration officer Peter Gauweiler . Süßmeier disguised himself as Gauweiler and had sarcastic posters with Gauweiler's likeness and the slogan "Gauweiler sees you - Gauweiler is watching you" hung up in his crossbowman tent. As a result of his actions, the district administration tightened the control measures around Süßmeier's business, which on September 30, 1984 led to the loss of the Oktoberfest license and his resignation as spokesman for the Oktoberfest restaurateurs.

He married Christa Pschorr, the daughter of the brewery owner Walter Pschorr , who was against the wedding. From this connection come a son and a daughter. At the height of his career, he took over the traditional Spöckmeier inn on Marienplatz and acquired the Forsthaus Wörnbrunn in Grünwald. He was also the operator and leaseholder of other restaurants in the Munich area such as the Großmarkthalle restaurant, the Amba hotel and the large restaurant on the Olympic site . Richard Süßmeier's biography was published in 2007 . He lived in Grünwald and died in November 2020.
