Richard Schardt (born February 11, 1930 in Frickhofen ; † January 4, 2015 in Darmstadt ) was a German civil engineer ( steel construction ) and professor of structural engineering at the TU Darmstadt .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hadamar, Schardt studied civil engineering at the TH Darmstadt from 1949, specializing in steel construction with Kurt Klöppel . He then worked for the steel construction company Donges in Darmstadt and was brought back to the Technical University of Darmstadt in 1956 by Klöppel for a research contract on flexural buckling of thin-walled prismatic rods. In 1962 he received his doctorate. He was assistant and from 1966 lecturer at the chair and gave lectures on statics. In addition to theoretical work, he was also active as an expert under Klöppel and carried out experiments (for example on the load-bearing capacity of electricity pylons). Among his projects, including the calculation of the dome of the German Pavilion at the World Expo 1970 in part Osaka , the construction of two hangars for large aircraft, the assessment of the safety of the reactor pressure vessel in Gundremmingen , the recalculation of the Main Bridge Schwanheim (including assembly conditions in the cantilever ). The latter led to the development of his generalized technical bending theory in his habilitation in 1965 in statics and steel construction. From 1970 until his retirement in 1995 he was a full professor of structural engineering in Darmstadt.

He developed a generalized technical bending theory (VTB) and represented it for several decades.

He was on the subcommittee TC7 (thin-walled structures) of the ECCS (European Convention for Constructional Steelwork).
