Richard Seaver

Richard Woodward Seaver (born December 31, 1926 in Watertown , Connecticut , † January 6, 2009 ) was an American publisher and translator and ran the publishing company Arcade Publishing with his wife Jeannette from 1988 until his death .

Life

Seaver was born in Connecticut and graduated from the University of North Carolina , where he taught briefly. He then went to Paris and wrote a dissertation on James Joyce at the Sorbonne . There he also met his future wife Jeannette Medina , whom he married in 1952. Before returning to the United States, he served two years in the United States Navy .

He moved to New York with his wife , worked for Grove Press from 1957 , where he was promoted to editor-in-chief. After he switched to Viking Press in 1971 and became CEO of Holt, Rinehart and Winston , he founded his own publishing house, Arcade Publishing .

He died of a heart attack on January 6, 2009.

Translations

Seaver has translated numerous books from French into English. In addition to Jorge Semprún , André Breton and Alexander Trocchi , he also broadcast the classics by Marquis de Sade .
