Richard Smith (politician)

Richard Smith (born March 22, 1735 in Burlington , New Jersey , †  September 17, 1803 in Natchez , Mississippi Territory ) was an American politician . Between 1774 and 1776 he was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress .

Career

Richard Smith was educated in Quaker schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1762, he worked in Philadelphia and later in Burlington in this profession. From 1762 he was also active as a county clerk for the district administration of Burlington County . In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. Between 1774 and 1776 he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress. In 1776 he was a member of the State Council of New Jersey. In the years 1776 and 1777 he was the successor of his late brother Finance Minister ( Treasurer ) of his state. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1790 he moved to Laurens, New York State , where he built his Smith Hall estate . In 1799 he moved to Philadelphia. In 1803 Richard Smith took a trip to the southern states . He became fatally ill. He died on September 17th of that year near Natchez in what is now Mississippi , where he was also buried.
