Career
His grandmother introduced him to golf at the age of four. As an amateur, Sterne won both the Youth and the National Open Championships of South Africa, in counting and match play .
Sterne became a professional golfer in 2001 and from the 2002 season played on the Challenge Tour , Europe's second-level tournament series. He qualified for the major European Tour from 2003 through the Tour School , won his first title in 2004 and has been a permanent member ever since. His best ranking so far in the European Tour Order of Merit was 14th place, which he achieved in 2007.
Sterne is close friends with the legendary South African golfer Gary Player , with whom he is often compared, not least because of their very similar stature.
