Richard Vahsel

Richard Vahsel (born February 9, 1868 in Hohnhorst near Hanover , † August 8, 1912 in the Weddell Sea ) was a German captain and polar explorer.

He first was on duty at the Hamburg-America Line until it at the request of Captain Ruser Hans as second officer on the under the direction of Erich von Drygalski standing Gauss Expedition , the first German Antarctic Expedition (1901 to 1903), pushed .

He was then captain of the Hapag steamer Peiho in the Hamburg South Sea Expedition 1908-1910 and the polar ship Germany in the Second German Antarctic Expedition in 1911 under Wilhelm Filchner . He died of an illness while drifting in the pack ice in the Weddell Sea .

The Vahsel Bay , the Vahsel Bay , the Vahsel Glacier and Cape Vahsel in South Georgia and Cape Vahsel in Antarctica are named after him.
