The Vahsel Bay (meantime Herzog-Ernst-bay ) is a bay , the west coast of between the Prince Regent Luitpold-country and the eastern boundary of the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in the Antarctic located. The Vahsel Bay has an extension of 7  miles (approx. 11.3 km) and a maximum depth of 10 miles (approx. 16.1 km) in the estuary to the Weddell Sea . The Schweitzer Glacier and the Lerchenfeld Glacier flow into the bay .

Discovery story

The bay was discovered during the second German Antarctic expedition (1911-1913) under Wilhelm Filchner . Filchner named it after Richard Vahsel (1868–1912), the captain of the expedition ship Germany . Vahsel died during the expedition. Filchner later renamed it Herzog-Ernst-Bucht (after Ernst II. Von Sachsen-Altenburg ) after large parts of the surrounding ice had broken away and a much larger bay had formed as a result. However, this renaming did not prevail over the long term.
