Richard Wollheim

Richard Arthur Wollheim (* 5. May 1923 in London , † 4. November 2003 ) was an English philosopher who, through his work in the fields of aesthetics and philosophy of mind ( at least was known). One of his last works was on emotions . His main work Painting as an Art is a philosophical psychology of painting . Wollheim was (from 1992) the President of the British Society for Aesthetics.

Life

Richard Wollheim - son of an artistic director and an actress - attended Westminster School in London and in 1941/42 and from 1945 to 1948 Balliol College in Oxford . Wollheim fought in Europe during World War II . In 1949 he graduated from Oxford with bachelor's and master's degrees. He had studied philosophy, political science and economics. Wollheim taught at University College London , where he became the Grote Professor of Mind and Logic and was the Dean of the Faculty from 1963 to 1982. Wollheim has been a visiting professor at Harvard , the University of Minnesota , City University in New York, and elsewhere.

He left England in protest against Thatcherism and went first to Columbia University (1982-1985), then to Berkeley. He taught there until 2002 and headed the philosophy faculty from 1998 to 2002. Since 1972 he has been a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy . In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1989 to 1996 he was, next to Berkeley, at the University of California in Davis .

As an emeritus he was a visiting professor at Balliol College for a short time. Wollheim's lectures on painting as art, given in 1984 as Andrew M. Mellon Lecturer in Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, were published as Painting as an Art in 1987 . His book Emotions is based on the Ernst Cassirer Lectures 1991 at Yale .

Wollheim was known for teaching analytical philosophy and Sigmund Freud's teaching.

His concentrated short text Art and its Objects was one of the most important treatises of Anglo-Saxon analytical aesthetics. Wollheim was widely known for his work on the minimalism of modern art, but the 1965 essay, Minimal Art , did not cover Minimal Art .

He wrote the novel A Family Romance in the 1960s , and the posthumously published autobiography Germs: A Memoir of Childhood was warmly received.
