Richmond is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the municipality of the same name in the uMgungundlovu district . Richmond has a population of about 3,349 (as of 2011; census).

The city was founded in 1850 when the Byrne settlers from the British Isles arrived here. The settlers got off to a difficult start as their ship sank and lost much of their belongings as a result.

Richmond is located at an altitude of 924 meters above sea level on the Mkomazi River in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands .
